In its format, each team engaged in a round-robin contest, playing against the other seven teams once. The top four teams from the league stage advanced to the playoffs for a shot at the title. Mumbai Indians, defending champions from the previous season, rose to the occasion yet again, clinching the championship by overcoming the Chennai Super Kings in a pulsating final match.

The Orange Cap, awarded to the top run-scorer of the season, was claimed by Robin Uthappa of Kolkata Knight Riders for his prolific batting displays. Meanwhile, the Purple Cap, reserved for the highest wicket-taker, found its place on the head of Mohit Sharma, also from Kings XI Punjab.
