Who we are
SportsGuff (“we”, “us”) operates the public sports writing website at https://sportsguff.com. Readers can browse articles, author pages, quizzes, and other public pages without creating an account. Writers can optionally create an account to publish stories, comment, and play scored quizzes.
This policy explains what personal data we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and how you can contact us or request deletion.
Contact: [email protected]. More about the service: About SportsGuff.
What this policy covers
This policy applies to sportsguff.com and related pages we operate, including sign-in, registration, the writer studio, comments, contact forms, and the NPL Quiz. It does not apply to third-party websites we link to, or to independent advertiser sites.
Information we collect
Information you give us
- Account details when you register: full name, username, email address, password (stored as a hash, not plain text), optional phone number, and optional short bio.
- Profile details you add later: photo, Facebook, X/Twitter, and Instagram links.
- Content you publish: article titles, body text, images, categories, tags, comments, and quiz answers.
- Messages you send us through the contact form or email: name, email, and message text.
Information from Google Sign-In
If you choose Continue with Gmail on our sign-in page, Google asks you to share a limited set of account data with SportsGuff. We request only:
- Your Google account email address
- Whether Google has verified that email
- Your Google account name
- A unique Google account identifier (used only to recognise the same Google account on later sign-ins)
We do not request access to your Gmail inbox, contacts, Drive files, calendar, photos, or the ability to send email as you. We do not receive your Google password.
We use that Google data only to create or find your SportsGuff writer account and to sign you in. If an account already exists with the same email, we attach Google Sign-In to that account and treat the email as verified. If no account exists, we create one using your Google name and email and generate a random password so the account can only be used through Google Sign-In or a later password reset that you start yourself.
Information collected automatically
- IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, and pages viewed
- Date and time of visits
- Session cookies needed to keep you signed in and to protect forms (CSRF)
- Quiz scores and answers if you play while signed in (linked to your writer account)
- Standard server logs used to run and secure the website
How we use your information
We use personal data to:
- Operate the public website and show published writing
- Create and authenticate writer accounts (email/password or Google Sign-In)
- Let you draft, edit, and publish articles under your byline
- Show your public author page (name, username, photo, bio, and published work)
- Send account emails: email verification and password reset links
- Record quiz points on the NPL Quiz leaderboard
- Respond to contact messages
- Prevent spam, abuse, and fraud (including rate limits and honeypot fields)
- Understand aggregate traffic so we can keep the site working
- Show advertising through Google AdSense, where ads are enabled
We do not use Google Sign-In data to advertise to you, to build advertising profiles, or to sell or rent your information.
Google user data: limited use
SportsGuff’s use of information received from Google APIs follows Google’s Limited Use requirements. In particular:
- We use Google user data only to provide and improve the user-facing sign-in feature described above.
- We do not sell Google user data.
- We do not use Google user data for serving advertisements.
- We do not allow humans to read Google user data except with your consent, for security or legal reasons, or when the data is already public (for example your display name on your author page).
- We do not transfer Google user data to others except as needed to run the service (our hosting provider), to comply with law, or if you ask us to.
Google’s own practices are described in the Google Privacy Policy.
Who we share information with
We share data only as needed to run SportsGuff:
- The public — name, username, photo, bio, and articles you publish are shown on the website. Unpublished drafts stay in your studio.
- Hosting and infrastructure — the servers that store the website and database.
- Google — if you use Google Sign-In, Google processes that sign-in. We also use Google Analytics / Google Tag Manager and, on some pages, Google AdSense.
- Email delivery — to send verification and password-reset messages.
- Legal requests — if we are required to disclose information by law or to protect the site and its users.
We do not sell personal information.
Cookies and similar technologies
We use cookies and similar storage to:
- Keep you signed in after you log in
- Protect account and contact forms
- Remember session state such as an in-progress quiz
- Measure traffic (Google Analytics)
- Show ads (Google AdSense / DoubleClick, where ads appear)
You can block or delete cookies in your browser. If you block essential cookies, sign-in and some forms may not work.
Google advertising cookies are described at https://policies.google.com/technologies/ads. You can opt out of personalised ads through Google’s ad settings.
Analytics and advertising
We use Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager to understand how visitors use the site (for example, which pages are read). These tools may collect device and usage data. Advertising partners, including Google, may use cookies to show ads based on visits to SportsGuff and other sites. SportsGuff does not control those third-party cookies.
How long we keep data
- Writer accounts and published articles stay until you ask us to remove them or we close the account for abuse.
- Drafts stay until you delete them or the account is removed.
- Quiz answers and scores stay linked to your account while the account exists.
- Contact messages are kept long enough to reply and then as needed for records.
- Server logs are kept for a limited time for security and operations.
- Google Sign-In identifiers stay with the account so you can sign in again with the same Google account.
How to access, correct, or delete your data
If you have a writer account, you can update your name, bio, photo, and social links in the writer studio (Edit profile). You can change your password there as well.
To request a copy of the personal data we hold about you, or to ask us to delete your account and associated personal data, email [email protected] from the address on the account. We will respond within 30 days. We may keep a minimal record if we must do so for legal, security, or abuse-prevention reasons. Published articles may remain if they have already been public, unless you also ask us to unpublish or remove them.
You can disconnect Google Sign-In by using a password reset to set a SportsGuff password, then asking us to remove the Google link, or by deleting the account.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict use of your personal data, to object to certain processing, and to data portability. California residents may also request the categories of personal data we have collected and ask us not to sell personal data (we do not sell it). Email [email protected] to exercise these rights. We will not discriminate against you for making a request.
Children
SportsGuff is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Security
We use HTTPS, hashed passwords, session controls, CSRF protection, and rate limits. No website is completely secure. Do not reuse an important password on SportsGuff if you also create a password-based account.
International users
SportsGuff is operated from Nepal and may store data on servers in other countries. If you use the site from elsewhere, you understand that your information may be processed outside your home country.
Changes to this policy
We may update this page when the service changes (for example, a new sign-in method). The “Last updated” date at the top will change. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
