Latham and Taylor shine as New Zealand start series with a win

New Zealand defeated India by 6 wickets at Wankhede Stadium Mumbai to take a 1-0 lead in the 3 match ODI series. New Zealand chased down a target of 281 runs as Tom Latham and Ross Taylor added 200 runs for the fourth wicket.

India won the toss and elected to bat first in a warm day at Mumbai. Trent Boult gave New Zealand a good start with the ball as he dismissed both the openers Rohit Sharma (20) and Shikhar Dhawan (9) cheaply. While wickets were falling down regularly from the other end, Indian captain Virat Kohli kept on scoring runs for his team. Dinesh Karthik (37), Kedar Jadhav (12), MS Dhoni (25), Hardik Pandya (16) couldnot play a longer innings for the team. Virat Kohli on the other end completed his 31st ODI hundred. Adam Milne and Mitch Santner picked up 3 wickets each while Boult bowled well for his 3 wickets.

New Zealand in reply were at 80-3 when the duo of Tom Latham and Ross Taylor joined the crease. They put on a huge match-winning stand of 200 runs for the fourth wicket before Ross Taylor got out to Bhuvneswor Kumar when the team was just one run away from victory. Latham remained unbeaten on 103 while Taylor was out for 95 runs. The duo batted very well against the spinners.They either used their stretch to play the sweep shot and on occasions waited for the turn to play the late cuts as the 20 overs by the spin twins yielded 125 runs but more importantly, they only lost one wicket.

Tom Latham was named Man of the Match for his match winning century. New Zealand now lead the three-match series 1-0. The second match of the series is scheduled to be played atMaharashtra Cricket Association, Pune on25th of October.
