What is missing in Rahul Dravid as a coach ?
July 7, 2022 | Bandana Adhikari 2.8K ReadsRahul Dravid was a great player and hardly anyone would disagree with this. He is probably the best technically sound Indian batsman. Rahul Dravid was a team man and most selfless player who can walk in a fire if his team needs.
Rahul Dravid was a great player and a pretty good captain. He has lead India to many glories, test win in SA after decades, test win in West Indies after two decades all are first done under him. The breakthrough in his captaincy career was a test series win in England in 2007 and that still remains the last series India won.
While the big loop in his captaincy career was a group stage exist the 2007 ODI WC. Soon after that, Dravid resigns from the captaincy. After bidding good bye to his cricketing career, many wanted him to see him in coaching role.
BCCI Offered him the coaching role of the India senior team but he choose India U-19 team. He was keen to invest in youngsters and want to set them in the future. He worked really hard with the U-19 team and in his 1st WC with the U-19 team, his team lost do lost the final but his hard work and investment set the future for India with likes of Risabh Pant, Ishan Kishan and many more. He won the World cup in his 2nd attempt.
After his successful tenure with Indian U-19 team, he was made head of NCA. On the other hand, Ravi Shastri's tenure as a coach of the India team was also about to end and then BCCI started looking for a new coach and they once again went to Dravid, and this time he accepted it.
Rahul Dravid as a Coach
Cricket fan was delighted when the news of Dravid appointed as a coach broke out. A lot was expected from the wall who built the U-19 team but nothing goes well for him. India lost the series with SL and drew the home test series against NZ. Clean sweep by an unsettled South African team and lost the opportunity to win the test series in England from a very commanding position.
Criticized heavily for the game plan against England
India was in a very commendable position in a test against England but England come back stunned the Indian team and chased down 378 runs. Rahul Dravid was heavily criticized after the defeat against England. Even few called him to waste. He was criticized for the game plan, as the team was not interested in taking the wicket instead they were defensive and tried to stop the flow of runs but failed miserably on that too.
Another shocking game plan was Jadeja, trying to bowl on the roughs he bowled too much negative bowling. This tactic was also criticized. Dravid received too much of trolls and criticism for his failure.
Compared with Ravi Shastri
Ravi Shastri was the kind of coach who changed the morale of the Indian team, Shastri-Kohli combo did wonders in Overseas. Dravid after continuous failure was compared to Shastri. Fan Believes Shastri built the team and along with the team he built the morals of the player.
Few Reasons behind Dravid Failure
1. Virat-BCCI controversy saga: Virat is India's biggest match-winner and recently Virat controversy with BCCI has not only hampered Virat but a lot of Indian teams as well.
2. Captaincy Drama: India has seen 8 captains in the first 6 months of 2022, it's very hard for a coach to adjust with every captain as different captain has different approach. Adjusting is the problem for all.
3. Star Playing skipping the series: Dravid has never got a full-strength team in his coaching career, player resting every now and then brings huge imbalance in the team. Trying a new player in every series is like experimenting which will backfire.
4. Frequent Injury of star players like Rohit and Rahul: Rohit despite being announced as Indian full-time captain of all formats has hardly led team India. Along with the captain, he is India's backbone but Rohit's frequent injury has caused huge problems for the coach. His position is very hard to fill. The same goes with Rahul as well who is seen more in hospital than on the ground.
5. Defensive Technique: Dravid not only being the defensive player, but he is also the defensive coach as well. If pressure arises, Dravid very soon goes to a defensive technique which we witness against England. Jadeja's bowling negative line for the long was nothing but a defensive technique.
6. Never received full fledge team.
7. Too Early to Judge his coaching career.
