The defending champions,Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), kickstarted their IPL 2026 campaign with a statement of intent, dismantling Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday night.

Chasing a formidable target of 202, RCB made the pursuit look like a walk in the park, reaching 203/4 in just 15.4 overs. The "Chase Master" Virat Kohli remained unbeaten on 69 off 38 balls*, while a returning Devdutt Padikkal set the stage on fire with a blistering 61 off 26 deliveries.

The Chase: Padikkal's Power and Kohli's Class

Despite losing Phil Salt early, RCB never took their foot off the gas. Padikkal and Kohli orchestrated a devastating 101-run partnership in just 45 balls. Padikkal, in particular, was relentless, reaching his half-century in a mere 21 balls and treating the SRH bowlers with disdain.

After Padikkal's departure, skipper Rajat Patidar kept the momentum alive with a quickfire 31 off 12 balls. Kohli then took over the finishing duties, sealing the win with a flurry of boundaries off Harshal Patel to ensure the home crowd went home happy with 26 balls to spare.

SRH Innings: Ishan Kishan's Lone Fight

Earlier, after being put into bat, Sunrisers Hyderabad struggled against a disciplined RCB attack. Debutant Jacob Duffy announced himself on the big stage with a dream spell, removing Abhishek Sharma, Travis Head, and Nitish Kumar Reddy early to leave SRH reeling at 29/3.

Stand-in captain Ishan Kishan played a captain’s knock, smashing 80 off 38 balls (8 fours, 5 sixes). He found support in Heinrich Klaasen (31) and a late cameo from Aniket Verma, who blazed 43 off 18 balls to propel SRH past the 200-run mark.

Hero of the Night: Jacob Duffy

While the batters stole the limelight in the second half, the Player of the Match award went to New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy. His opening burst effectively broke the back of the SRH top order, finishing with elite figures of 3/22 on his IPL debut.

"It was an awesome experience to make my debut here. The new ball did a bit, and I just tried to hit the right lengths. To get wickets like Head and Abhishek early on was a bonus," said Duffy during the post-match presentation.

With this win, the defending champions have sent a clear warning to the rest of the league: the trophy remains in Bengaluru, and they aren't ready to give it up yet. RCB will look to continue their winning streak against their next opponents, while SRH will seek to regroup after their bowling unit was taken to the cleaners.
