Test cricket is the longest format of the game and is regarded the ultimate test of a player's patience, temperament, skill and technique. It does take a great effort and endurance for a player to adjust himself to changing playing conditions.

Here, in this article we are going through the list of highest partnerships in Test cricket by wickets :

First Wicket : Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith (415 runs)

Openers Neil McKenzie and Graeme Smith put on a 415 run stand for the opening partnership against Bangladesh in 2008. It was the second test match of the series as South Africa had already won the first match by 5 wickets. McKenzie scored 226 runs while Smith scored 232 runs. South Africa went on to win the match by an innings and 205 runs.

Second Wicket : Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama (576 runs)

The duo of Sanath Jayasuriya and Roshan Mahanama added 576 runs for the second wicket againt India in August 1997 at Colombo. India declared at 537/8 as Navjot Singh Sidhu, Sachin Tendulkar and Mohammad Azharuddin scored centuries. In reply, Srilank had lost Marvan Atapattu for 26 runs. But Jayasuriya and Mahanama put on a record partnership followed by a century from the bat of Aravinda de Silva. Jayasuriya made 340 runs while Mahanama scored 225 runs. The test match was drawn.

Third Wicket : Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene (624 runs)

This is also the record for highest partnership for any wicket in test cricket till date. The dynamic duo of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene were the pillars of Srilankan batting for significant period of time. It was in July 2006 when Sangakkara and Jayawardene added 624 runs for third wicket in repy to South Africa's total of 169 in first innings. Sangakkara made 287 and Jayawardene scored 374 runs. Srilanka won the match by an innings and 153 runs.

Fourth Wicket : Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh (449 runs)

Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh added 449 runs for fourth wicket against West Indies in December 2015. Voges remained unbeaten on 269 runs while Marsh was dismissed after scoring 182 runs. Australia declared at 583/4 and then bowled out West Indies for 223 and 148 to register a win by an innings and 212 runs.

Fifth Wicket : Sid Barnes and Donald Bradman (405 runs)

It was way back in December 1946 when Sid Barnes and Donald Bradman added 405 runs record partnership against England at Sydney. In reply to England's total of 255 in first innings, Australia declared at 659/8 as both Bradman and Barnes scored 234 runs each. England were then bowled out for 371 runs in second inning as Australia won the match by an innings and 33 runs.

Sixth Wicket : Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow (399 runs)

Two Englishmen Ben Stokes and Johhny Bairstow recorded a 399 run stand for the sixth wicket against South Africa in January 2016 at Cape Town which is still the record partnership for sixth wicket. England declared at 629/6 in first innings. Stokes scored 258 while Bairstow remained unbeaten on 150. In reply South Africa declared at 627/7 riding on the back of a double century by Hashim Amla. Eventually, the match ended in a draw.

Seventh Wicket : Denis Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiaza (347 runs)

Two West Indian batsmen Denis Atkinson and Clairmonte Depeiaza added record 347 runs for seventh wicket against Australia back in May 1955. Australia had scored 668 runs in the first innings. In reply, West Indies were bowled out for 510 runs. Skipper Denis Atkinson scored 219 runs and Depeiaza scored 122 runs. West Indies were set a target of 408 runs to win in the fourth innings, but the match ended in a draw.

Eighth Wicket : Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad (332 runs)

Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad came as saviour for England in the 4th Test against Pakistan at Lord's in 2010. England were in deep trouble at 102/7 as Mohammad Amir was at top of his game picking up 6 wickets. Trott and Broad added 332 runs for eighth wicket as England recovered well and posted 446 runs in first innings. Trott scored 184 runs while Broad made crucial 169 runs. Pakistan were then bowled out for 74 runs and 147 runs to hand over a victory to England by an innings and 225 runs.

Ninth Wicket : Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox (195 runs)

South African batsmen Mark Boucher and Pat Symcox added 195 runs for the ninth wicket against Pakistan in February 1998 at Johannesburg. South Africa were once struggling at 166/8. Then came the record partnership and South Africa had scored 361 runs when Symcox was dismissed. Boucher scored 78 while Symcox played handy knock of 108 runs to save the match for his side. Eventually, the match ended in a draw.

Tenth Wicket : Joe Root and James Anderson (198 runs)

It was during India's tour of England in July 2014, when Joe Root and James Anderson added record breaking 198 runs for the tenth wicket. India had posted 457 runs in their first innings with a century by Murali Vijay. In reply, England were bowled out for 496 runs. Thanks to the last wicket partnership between Root and Anderson that gave the home side a lead of 39 runs in first innings. Eventually, the match ended in a draw.
