IPL 2027: Five CSK Players Who Could Be Released as Chennai Look to Free Up ?23.65 Crore
Chennai Super Kings endured a season to forget in IPL 2026. CSK began the 2026 campaign with high expectations after the High-profile trade for Sanju Samson and investing significant money on young Indian uncapped players Kartik Sharma and Prashant Veer . However, the season which started with high hopes and expectation quickly turned into a disappointing one after several players got injured mid season and exposing several weakness in the team questioning the team's auction strategy and overall direction . Now as the franchise moves towards a new direction after a complete overhaul of it's entire coaching staff, CSK will be hoping to bounce back and build a reliable and stronger side ahead of 2027 season.
As changes in the coaching setup might not be enough the franchise could also take some difficult decisions about its players who struggled to make a impact and players who couldnt secure their place in the playing XI . With the auction taking place in second week of December, here are five CSK players who could be released as Chennai looks to rebuild the squad and potentially free up ? 23.65 crore providing the team huge purse ahead of the 2026 mini auction
1.Prashant Veer - ? 14.2crore
Prashant Veer is arguably the most difficult name on the list because CSK invested ? 14.2 crore in the youngster making him the most expensive uncapped Indian player of all time in the auction and their biggest purchase of IPL 2026 auction . He was bought in as like -for -like replacement and potential successor to Ravindra Jadeja because of his left-arm spin and batting ability .
Veer featured in just six matches, scoring 90 runs at an average of 45 and a strike rate of 134.33 . On the bowling side he only bowled two overs, conceding 25 runs without taking a wicket. He failed to justify his hefty price tag, while his limited bowling opportunities also meant he could not fully demonstrate his ability as Jadeja's replacement.
Releasing him would be a major decision, considering his age and high potential. However, CSK could also consider releasing him and buying him back at a low rate if they see him as a long-term prospect .
2.Rahul Chahar – ?5.20 crore
Rahul Chahar could be another player CSK could release ahead of the 2026 auction. The leg-spinner was bought for ?5.20 crore to partner with Noor Ahmad.
His contribution was however limited as he was featured only in one match, bowling four overs and conceding 46 runs with 0 wickets at an economy rate of 11.50 .
Now with Noor Ahmad and Akeal Hosein leading the spin attack and other options like Shreyas Gopal available in the squad, CSK would look to invest in strengthening other department considering his release would free ?5.20 crore from the team purse
3.Matt Henry – ?2 crore
New Zeland's fast bowler Matt Henry was bought for ?2 crore to strengthen CSK's pace attack in the power play given his new ball ability.
Henry only played three matches managing just two wickets, conceding 130 runs in 10 overs with an high economy rate of 13.00 which prompted the management to bench him in most of the matches.
Despite his international experience, his expensive bowling figures could lead CSK to most likely release him for the 2027 season and look for another fast bowler.
4.Mattehew Short – ?1.50 crore
Australian all-rounder Matthew Short was signed for ?1.50 crore to provide and strengthen the batting depth and spin options . He however failed to make an impact during his limited appreances.
He featured in only three matches, scoring just 60 runs at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 117.65. With the ball, he only bowled three overs, conceding 39 runs and failed to take a wicket
With limited overseas slots remaining, CSK could most likely release him using the vacant slot for either a death specialist bowler or an overseas finisher .
5.Zakary Foulkes – ?75 lakh
Zakary Foulkes could be another player CSK would be looking to release ahead of IPL 2027. The New Zealand all-rounder was signed for ?75 lakh during the 2026 auction, when Stephen Fleming was still the team's head coach.
Unlike the other player on the list above, Foulkes did not play any matches for CSK in 2026. His release would be more about squad composition and overseas-player availability than his performances on the field.
