Sri Lanka's Rise Under Sanath Jayasuriya
November 10, 2024 | Pranjal Khatiwada 190 ReadsBeyond the Chris Silverwood Era
Sri Lanka's cricket team has significantly transformed recently, especially after the Chris Silverwood era. While they performed well during his tenure, they were not quite reaching the winning mark. Having had a somewhat successful T20 and ODI WC campaign, they weren’t reaching their potential. This could partly be attributed to having a foreign coach, which sometimes may have led to a disconnect in understanding the local conditions and player dynamics. However, we cannot overlook the credit due to Chris Silverwood. He took the job of the head coach of Sri Lanka under the most difficult circumstances and during the most challenging transition phase. And now that the transition phase has reached another level, they are slowly becoming a world-beating side.
Series Wins Against India, West Indies, and New Zealand
Probably the most difficult start to the tenure of Jayasuriya, Sri Lanka faced India in an ODI series. India, a world-beating side, was considered invincible against Sri Lanka before the start of the series. However, the Sri Lankan spinners Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana wreaked havoc against a quality Indian batting lineup. Partly supported by the batsmen, Sri Lanka went on to win the series 2-0.
After the ODI series against India, Sri Lanka faced Bazball in a 3-match test series against England at their home. Having a transitioning side, they did well in the first two tests and gave a proper fight to the English. Kamindu Mendis was a standout performer for them in the series. Even though they lost the series against England 2-1, this was a good result considering their transitioning phase.
Against West Indies, Sri Lanka looked like a world-beating side. They won both the T20I and ODI against West Indies easily. The spinners under the leadership of Charith Asalanka were honing their maximum potential. The skipper Charith himself was having the time of his life with his batting form. Young Asitha Fernando and Matheesha Pathirana handled the pace department well.
Sri Lanka continued their success against New Zealand in Test matches. They annihilated New Zealand. Even the star batter Kane Williamson couldn’t read the Sri Lankan spinners and the ever-so-tweaky New Zealand side crumbled in the Asian conditions.
Rise of Charith Asalanka as Captain
One of the most notable changes has been the rise of Charith Asalanka as captain. His leadership has been instrumental in guiding the team to several victories. Asalanka's ability to read the game, make strategic decisions, and lead by example has been a key factor in Sri Lanka's recent successes.
Current Form and Future Prospects
Sri Lanka's current form has been impressive, especially in T20 cricket. They recently defeated New Zealand in the first T20I match of the series, with Charith Asalanka playing a pivotal role. The team's ability to adapt to different conditions and their aggressive approach has made them a tough opponent for any team.
Looking ahead, Sri Lanka's cricket team seems to be on an upward trajectory. With strong leadership under Charith Asalanka, a potent spin attack, and a resilient batting lineup, they are well-positioned to continue their success in international cricket.
