South African Superstar David Miller Joins Karnali Yaks for NPL

Kathmandu – Karnali Yaks have announced the high-profile signing of South African star cricketer David Miller for the third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL). The franchise confirmed on Friday that the destructive left-handed middle-order batsman from the Test-playing nation will be joining their ranks, marking a significant coup for the Nepalese domestic cricket scene.

A Powerhouse Addition and Global Talent Pool

Miller becomes the sixth international player to sign with the Karnali Yaks. The team had previously announced the acquisition of Pakistan T20 captain Sahibzada Farhan and, on Thursday, confirmed the signing of renowned Pakistani all-rounder Hussain Talat. Scottish all-rounder Mark Watt, who enjoyed a stellar performance in the second season, will also return to play for the Karnali Yaks. Interestingly, Miller, Farhan, Talat, along with Arifful and Akbar (presumably other international signings not detailed in the original text but implied), will all be making their NPL debuts, with Watt being the only returning international from this group.

Club Chairman Expresses Enthusiasm

Grihendra Ghimire, Chairman of Karnali Yaks Sports Pvt. Ltd., expressed his delight at securing such a prominent player, fulfilling the aspirations of the club’s supporters. “Our supporters had high expectations from Karnali Yaks. In line with that, we have successfully signed a world-renowned player like David Miller,” Ghimire stated. He further emphasized that Miller’s arrival instantly positions Karnali Yaks as a strong title contender and will also contribute significantly to promoting tourism in Nepal.

“In our first season, we signed Shikhar Dhawan, which generated considerable buzz for Nepalese cricket and the NPL. This time, we have brought in David Miller, Sahibzada Farhan, and Hussain Talat. I believe this will not only benefit Karnali Yaks but also the NPL and contribute greatly to the promotion of tourism in Nepal,” Ghimire added. “Our current focus is now firmly set on winning the championship.”

Miller's Impressive Career

The 37-year-old Miller has left an indelible mark on global franchise leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), Australia’s Big Bash League, and the Pakistan Super League, among many others. In the IPL alone, he has represented Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, and Gujarat Titans. Notably, Miller was a key player in Gujarat Titans’ historic IPL title victory in 2022.

  • T20 Internationals: Miller has accumulated 2,804 runs in 140 T20I matches for South Africa, including two centuries and nine half-centuries. Both of his T20I centuries were scored against India and Bangladesh.
  • Overall T20 Record: In his extensive T20 career, spanning 584 matches, he has amassed 12,435 runs, featuring four centuries and 53 half-centuries. He holds the record for the fastest T20I century by a South African, reaching the milestone in just 35 balls against Bangladesh in 2017. He also famously scored an IPL century off 38 balls for Punjab against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Karnali Yaks’ Domestic Strength

The NPL is scheduled to commence on November 9. Karnali Yaks’ domestic roster is bolstered by marquee player Sompal Kami, alongside national team all-rounder Gulshan Jha and bowler Nandan Yadav. Additionally, the squad includes local talents from Karnali Province such as Bipin Sharma, Yunis Bikram Singh, and Dipendra Rawat, as well as Pawan Sarraf, Yuvraj Khatri, Deepak Dumre, Surya Tamang, Diwan Pun, Shivam Tiwari, and Sachin Sharma.
