Root-Bairstow centuries shatter India

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow's stunning centuries helped England to a historic 7 wicket win over India in the fifth Test. England chased down a record target in their Test history to draw the five-match series 2-2.
Chasing a target of 378 for victory, England crossed the victory line losing 3wickets in 76.4 overs in the first session. This is the largest total England has ever achieved in Test cricket. Earlier, England had completed the target of 359 runs against Australia in Leeds in 2019.
England's Joe Root remained unbeaten on 142 off 173 balls with 19 fours and 1 six. This is Root's 28th Test century and 11th since 2021. Jonny Bairstow remained unbeaten on 114 off 145 balls with 15 fours and one six. This is his 12th century in the longest format of the game.
Bairstow scored centuries in both innings of this match. as he had scored 106 runs in the first innigns.. Root and Bairstow put on an unbeaten partnership of 269 off 316 balls for the fourth wicket to secure a historic victory.
England got off to a great start with openers Zak Crawley and Alex Lees sharing a century opening stand with 107 runs in 21.4 overs. Jaspreet Bumrah broke the partnership Crawley was bowled after scoring 46 runs.Crawley struck seven fours in 76 balls. Ollie Pope was caught by Pant off Bumrah.
Lees was unfortunate to be runout for 56 off 65 balls with eight boundaries. After losing three wickets for two runs, England were 109-3 despite a good start. But then the Indian bowlers became helpless against Root and Bairstow. India's Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets.
Earlier, on the fourth day, India were all out for 245 in the second session. As they took the lead with 132 runs in the first innings, England were set a target of 378 runs to win the match. India's wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant contributed 57 runs off 86 balls with eight fours.
Cheteshwar Pujara top-scored with 66 off 168 balls which included eight boundaries. Apart from these two, no signifant contributions were made by other Indian batsmen.
Shreyas Iyer 19, Ravindra Jadeja 23, Shardul Thakur 4 and Mohammad Shami scored 13 runs. England captain Ben Stokes took the four wickets. Stuart Broad and Matthew Potts shared 2 wickets each. James Anderson and Jack Leach picked up a wicket each.
Earlier, England were all out for 284 in the first innings. England's Johnny Bairstow scored 106 off 140 balls with 14 fours and two sixes. This was the 11th century of Bairstow's Test career.
Joe Root was dismissed for 31 off 67 balls with four boundaries and Sam Bowlings was dismissed for 36 off 57 balls with four boundaries. India's Mohammad Shiraz picked up 4 wickets while Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets. Mohammad Shami bagged two wickets.
After losing the toss in Birmingham, India were all out for 416 in the first innings. Wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant played a brilliant innings of 146 runs off 111 balls with 20 fours and 4 sixes. This is the fifth century of Pant's Test career.
Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant put India in a strong position for the sixth wicket with a double century partnership of 222 runs. Jadeja was dismissed for 104 off 194 balls with 13 fours.
Bumrah remained unbeaten on 31 off 16 balls with four fours and two sixes. Bumrah added 35 runs in one over of Stuart Board which is now the most expensive over in Test cricket. England's James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers for England as he completed yet another five wicket haul.
The series had to be rescheduled due to number of COVID cases in September last year. While the first match was drawn, India won the second match by 151 runs. England won the third game by an innings margin of 76 runs and lost the fourth game by 157 runs.
India and England will now play a series of three ODIs and three T20I matches. The first T20I match will be played on Thursday.
Rohit Sharma is now fit to lead the Indian side. Jos Buttler will be leading the home side. Everyone will be looking at Buttler's performance and captaincy specially after the retirement of regular captain, Eoin Morgan.
