Mourinho Blasts Four-Match Ban for Vinicius Jr: 'Real Fans Are Not Stupid'

Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho has expressed his profound dissatisfaction with the four-match ban imposed on Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior, particularly criticizing the timing of its announcement.

Speaking at a press conference following Real Madrid's thrilling UEFA Champions League Matchweek 2 victory over AS Roma, Mourinho questioned the highly unusual decision to declare such a significant suspension just two hours before a crucial fixture.

Mourinho's Outrage

"Is it normal to find out about a four-match ban with only two hours remaining before playing an important match?" Mourinho queried, his frustration palpable.

The veteran manager didn't hold back, directly addressing the club's supporters. "Real Madrid fans are not stupid, and I will do my best to open their eyes," Mourinho asserted, suggesting a deliberate attempt to undermine the club.

Real Madrid secured a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory against Roma, battling back from a 3-1 deficit to claim all three points. The decision regarding Vinicius was made public by the Spanish Football Federation's disciplinary committee mere hours before kick-off against Roma.

The Rationale Behind the Ban

According to Mourinho, the timing of the ban's announcement was intended to negatively impact Real Madrid. Vinicius Junior received a straight red card during a match against Villarreal for pulling an opponent's hair. The subsequent ban was reportedly imposed not only for his on-field conduct but also for protesting against the referee's decision.

Significant Games Missed

The four-match suspension means Vinicius will miss several pivotal encounters, including the highly anticipated El Clásico against Barcelona, as well as league fixtures against Sevilla, Racing, and Valencia. He is not expected to return to La Liga action until after the November international break.

Real Madrid has confirmed its intention to appeal the ban. In a minor victory for the club, an appeal against a yellow card issued to French defender Konaté during the same Villarreal match was successful.
