Mbappe Brace Sinks Barcelona in El Clásico Thriller

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 in Sunday’s El Clasico at Camp Nou, handing the hosts a crucial defeat in the Spanish La Liga title race.

Mbappe opened the scoring in the 41st minute before netting the decisive goal in the 87th minute to secure all three points for Madrid.

Barcelona captain Raphinha restored parity in the 61st minute, finishing off a pass from Pedri to bring the home side back into the contest. However, Madrid had the final say when Mbappe struck with just three minutes remaining.

Madrid’s opening goal came after a defensive error from Barcelona’s Gerard Martin. While attempting to clear a low cross from Yan Diomande, Martin inadvertently deflected the ball into Mbappe’s path, allowing the French forward to score.

Both sides had opportunities in the first half. Mbappe hit the post with another attempt, while Barcelona’s young forward Lamine Yamal missed a close-range opportunity.

After Raphinha’s equaliser, Barcelona appeared capable of salvaging a draw. However, a move initiated by Jude Bellingham and continued by substitute Eduardo Camavinga ended with Mbappe finishing into an unguarded net to seal Madrid’s victory.

Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin also played an important role after first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois missed the match through illness. Lunin produced several key saves to help his side secure the win.

The result prevented Barcelona from matching Madrid’s record of nine consecutive victories at the start of a La Liga season, set in 1968–69. Barcelona had been aiming to surpass that achievement this season.

Mbappe has now scored eight goals in seven appearances against Barcelona since joining Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain in 2024. His brace also took his La Liga tally for the season to 11 goals. Raphinha remains ahead in the league’s scoring charts with 13 goals.

After 10 matches, Barcelona remain top of the La Liga standings with 27 points, two ahead of second-placed Atletico Madrid. Real Madrid sit third with 24 points.
