French champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have sacked their Argentine head coach Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday.

Pochettino's contract with PSG is still one year away from 2023, but he has been fired. PSG's exit from the pre-quarterfinals of the Champions League has been a factor in his sacking.

After PSG renewed the contract of its forward Kylian Mbappe, there was talk of a change of coach and he was sacked before the pre-season for the new season.

PSG has issued an official statement on its social media confirming Pochettino's departure. "Paris Saint-Germain have confirmed that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the club," the statement said.

After the dismissal of the then head coach Thomas Tuchel, PSG had appointed Pochettino, who had previously been the coach of English club Tottenham Hotspur, as the head coach of PSG in January 2021. Meanwhile, Tuchel coached English club Chelsea to help the team win the Champions League.

Pochettino has helped PSG win the French Cup and the Trophy des Champions, along with the French Ligue 1. However, PSG's goal was to win the Champions League. But the team could not advance beyond pre-quarterfinals. Young star Kylian Mbappe and Brazilian Neymar along with Argentine Lionel Messi were a part of the team which was eliminated from the pre-quarterfinals.

Under Pochettino, PSG have played 95 games. They have 55 wins, 15 draws and 14 losses. PSG is preparing to sign Stoff Galtier as the new coach.
