Lumbini Lions Roar into NPL Season 3 with Dominant Victory Over Sudurpaschim
Kathmandu – The Lumbini Lions, reigning champions of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), have kicked off their Season 3 title defense in emphatic fashion, securing a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sudurpaschim.
In a one-sided encounter at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Monday, the Lions comfortably chased down Sudurpaschim's meager target of 88 runs, reaching it in just 9.5 overs with three wickets down.
Lions' Batting Prowess
The chase was spearheaded by an explosive knock from DRC Short, who bludgeoned a quickfire 40 runs off just 18 balls, including four fours and three towering sixes. His opening partner, Aasif Sheikh, provided solid support with a well-compiled 32 runs, laying a strong foundation for the defending champions' successful pursuit.
For Sudurpaschim, the bowlers struggled to contain the aggressive Lions' batting lineup. Anil Kharel managed to pick up two wickets, while captain Dipendra Singh Airee claimed one, but their efforts were insufficient to halt the flow of runs.
Sudurpaschim's Batting Collapse
Earlier in the day, after losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Sudurpaschim endured a torrid time at the crease, collapsing to a paltry 87 runs all out in just 17.2 overs. Only three of their batters managed to reach double figures, highlighting a significant struggle against the Lions' disciplined bowling attack.
- Captain Airee top-scored for Sudurpaschim with 27 runs, attempting to steady the innings amidst the collapse.
- Saif Zaib contributed 13 runs before returning to the pavilion.
- Anil Kharel remained unbeaten with 15 runs, a lone fighter in a dismal batting performance.
Lions' Bowling Excellence
The defending champions' bowling unit showcased exceptional skill and control, dismantling the Sudurpaschim batting lineup with precision. Kishore Mahato was the pick of the bowlers, claiming an impressive four wickets, leaving Sudurpaschim reeling.
Sher Malla also played a crucial role, sending three opposition batsmen back to the dugout. Further contributions came from Shadley van Schalkwyk, Rohit Paudel, and Tilak Bhandari, who each chipped in with a wicket, completing a comprehensive bowling performance that set the stage for their team's comfortable victory.
This dominant opening performance sends a clear message to the rest of the league: the Lumbini Lions are in formidable form and are determined to retain their NPL title.
