IPL 2027: CSK and SRH Orchestrate Four-Player Trade Ahead of Mega Auction
High-Profile Trade Deal Rocks IPL Ahead of 2027 Auction
In a significant pre-auction development, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have executed a four-player trade, shifting key talent between the two franchises. The deal, announced by the BCCI on Thursday, sees England all-rounder Liam Livingstone and Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards moving to CSK, while Indian left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed and Australian fast bowler Nathan Ellis will now don the SRH colors.
Liam Livingstone, who was acquired by SRH for a hefty INR 13 crore in the previous auction, joins CSK for a current fee of INR 6 crore. His versatile skills, including aggressive batting and both off-spin and leg-spin bowling, make him a valuable addition to the Super Kings' squad. Accompanying him is Australian all-rounder Jack Edwards, signed by CSK for INR 3 crore. Edwards, who SRH had signed before his international debut, unfortunately missed IPL 2026 due to a leg injury.
On the other side of the trade, Sunrisers Hyderabad bolster their bowling attack with the acquisition of Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis. Khaleel Ahmed, returning to his former franchise, joins SRH for a current fee of INR 4.8 crore. He previously played for Hyderabad from 2018 to 2021. Khaleel had a decent run with CSK in IPL 2025, picking up 15 wickets in 14 matches, but his IPL 2026 season was cut short after just five games due to a right thigh muscle injury. Over his two seasons with CSK, Khaleel bagged 17 wickets in 19 matches.
Australian paceman Nathan Ellis joins SRH for INR 2 crore. Known for his variations and effectiveness in the death overs, Ellis is expected to significantly strengthen Hyderabad's fast-bowling department, providing crucial firepower in the latter stages of an innings.
IPL 2027 Auction Set for December 16 in Goa
The stage is now set for the IPL 2027 player auction, which will take place on December 16 in Goa. All ten franchises have until November 17 to finalize their retention lists, indicating which players they wish to keep and which will be released back into the auction pool.
This year's auction marks a return to Indian soil, following three consecutive auctions held outside the country. The 2024 auction was hosted in Dubai, followed by Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for 2025, and Abu Dhabi in 2026.
Retention Deadline Extended
In related news, the BCCI has extended the deadline for player retentions by two days. Franchises now have until November 17, instead of the original November 15, to submit their lists of retained and released players ahead of the mini-auction.
