India complete a historic 3-0 whitewash against Srilanka

India defeated Srilanka by an innings and 171 runs in the third and final test match at Pallekele to complete their first whitewash in an overseas three test series.Srilanka started from 19/1 in the third day to get allout for mere 181 in their second innings to give a comprehensive victory to India by an innings and 171 runs at Pallekele.

Following on, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 181 on the third day as off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin took 4-68 and Mohammed Shami 3-32.Niroshan Dickwella, who top-scored with 41, was one of only three Sri Lanka batsmen to pass 16.Dinesh Chandimal and Angelo Mathews resisted with a 65-run stand for the fifth wicket and fought hard in the hour before Lunch break but that was not enough.

Mohammed Shami and R Ashwin set the tone for the day early and followed it throughout as India bowled out Sri Lanka for 181 in the second innings. Following on after being bowled out for 135 in the first innings, Sri Lanka resumed at 19 for 1 with Dimuth Karunaratne and nightwatchman Malinda Pushpakumara having lost opener Upul Tharanga late on day two.

India won the first Test in Galle by 304 runs and the second in Colombo by an innings and 53 runs, which was their first victory by an innings in Sri Lanka.

This is the first time India have whitewashed an away series of three or more Tests. Overall, this is the fifth time India have whitewashed a Test series of three or more matches.
