Barcelona and the Flick Way
May 28, 2024 | Sushil Thapa 180 ReadsBarcelona are set to be under Hansi Flick after sacking Xavi recently following a trophyless season. The whole situation unfolded pretty quickly as the scenario change in an uexpected way. Xavi, who was on the verge of leaving Barcelona at the end of the season was convinced to stay by the Barcelona management only to sack him after a month of his approval as the manager for one more season. This decision was shocking especially for Barcelona fans , majority of whom backed Xavi even after a bad season.
Why was Xavi Sacked?
The same management that convinced Xavi to stay when he was about to leave made a sudden change in their decisions with the decision to sack Xavi. This decision came following few events main of which was the interview Xavi gave. Xavi recently in an interview stated that Barcelona was not in the level of competing with Real Madrid and other Big European Clubs which seemed to be the igniting factor for his removal.
The gaffer reportedly told the other way to the president when same thing was discussed few times back and he changed his statement on the interview which seemed like a major dissapointment for Laporta. This definetely has a political reason as Laporta would not want to be seen as a President under whom Barcelona cannot compete with Real Madrid. Therefore the statement by Xavi was not liked by the President who immediately took decision to sack him.
The relationship between Laporta and Xavi was never seen a healthy one as there has always been some dissatisfactions about the other from the both sides. Barcelona media and president were always raising issues about him handling the situation and the crisis management. Barcelona were open to talks with other managers and Flick managed to convience the board that he would take the team to a better level and he also has a success in the club level with Bayern Munich when his team were one of the most dominant and feared teams in Europe.
Xavi will coach Barcelona for the last time in last league game against Sevilla which will mark the end of the spanish career as a coach for now with Barcelona. There has been no any links of Xavi yet. Xavis spell at Barcelona was mediocure where he helped a transicitioning Barcelona win some titles and helped flourish Lamasia in the best way giving debuts to multiple star Barcelona products like Yamal, Gavi, Cubaresi and few other players from outside Lamasia like Araujo and Raphinha.
The Flick Way ?
Barcelona are known for their spanish flavored typical possesion based tiki taka football and the club has been always following the philosophy and has had good amount of success following the principle. However now with Hansi Flick, the approach seems to change as Flick is more pragmatic coach rather then the philosophical ones and is not expected to change his style of play.
Flick and Barcelona however makes sense in few ways. The most similar aspect is Robert Lewandoski. The lethal striker was seen in less critical actions under Xavi, however Flick's main weapon in Bayern was Robert Lewandoski who shined under flick and was the best player that year leaving everyone behind. Besides that Flick also trusts the likes of Ilkay Gundgan and Ter Stegan who were key players to him in his Germany spell.
Even though the team playing styles are different Flick and Barcelona share one similarity and that is attacking game. Both are focused on fully attacking mentality which might help the team to acheive something. Flick heavily ddepends on wingers which was also the case with Barcelona depending on likes of Raphinha and young Yamal. Flick also has Cancelo who supports his tactical aspects as Flick prefers full backs play higher. Barcelona needs not to worry about the midfield section as enough talents are available from which Flick can integrate.
Flick style will defenitely be different but this is the risk management are willing to take as Barcelona are set to play in the Hansi Flick way. This comes with the hope that he is succesful manager in the club level and was assistant coach in the world cup winning Germany squad. However his spell as head coach in Germany is a one to forget as he was sacked after a year of failures.
