Kings XI Punjab defeated Gujarat Lions in the 26th match of ongoing IPL by 26 runs to complete their third win in the tournament. Hasim Amla once again shined with the bat while Axar Patel contributed with both bat and ball.
Put into bat after losing the toss, Punjab made a healthy total of 188 for seven with the help of opener Hashim Amla’s knock of 65 off 40 balls, who scored a century in his last game for KXIP, scored a brilliant half-century and with Shaun Marsh, shared a 70-run stand. After his fall, Glenn Maxwell his an 18-ball 31 to continue the KXIP charge. Axar's cameo of 34 runs off 17 balls enabled the Kings XI Punjab to reach a fighting total after 20 overs. Andrew Tye was the pick of the bowlers for Gujarat who finished with the figures of 2-35.
Chasing 189, Gujarat lost Brendon McCullum in the first over as Sandeep Sharma caught him in front of the wickets. Skipper Suresh Raina (32) and Aaron Finch (13) added 40 runs at a brisk pace. But skipper Glenn Maxwell's brilliant catch at the deep mid-wicket boundary to dismiss Raina completely changed the match scenario. Raina played the customary swat over cow corner but Maxwell kept his balance as he timed his jump to perfection.
Dinesh Karthik scored a fighting half-century but he did not get any support from the other end as Punjab bowlers continued to pile on the pressure with regular wickets. Axar Patel, KC Cariappa and Sandeep Sharma picked up 2 wickets each for Kings XI Punjab. Hasim Amla was named Man of the Match for his match winning knock of 65 runs off 40 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes.
