Michael Hussey Returns as Australia's Cricket Coaching Consultant for Key Campaigns
Former Australian batting stalwart Michael Hussey has officially rejoined the national cricket setup as a coaching consultant, taking on a crucial role in preparing the team for a series of high-stakes tournaments. His responsibilities will span across strategic planning for the 2027 Ashes series, the One-Day International World Cup in the same year, the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and upcoming T20 World Cups slated for Australia and New Zealand.
Hussey's new tenure will commence with the upcoming T20 series against England, where he will begin implementing his expertise. Following this, he will assist head coach Andrew McDonald in the preparations for the highly anticipated Test series against New Zealand in Perth. This appointment marks a return for Hussey, who has previously served the Australian team in short-term batting consultant capacities.
Hussey Rejects England Offer to Commit to Australia
Notably, Hussey turned down an offer to join England's coaching staff earlier this year. After former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming took over as England's Test team head coach, he extended an invitation to his long-time colleague, Hussey, to be part of his coaching group. However, Hussey chose to commit to a long-term role with the Australian team, highlighting his dedication to his home country's cricket.
Balancing Global T20 Commitments and National Duty
Michael Hussey's extensive commitments in commentary and various T20 leagues worldwide have historically limited his availability to the Australian team. He currently serves as the batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and holds the head coach position for Welsh Fire in England's 'The Hundred' competition. Furthermore, Hussey was a part of England's T20 World Cup-winning coaching group in 2022, under then-head coach Matthew Mott.
"Excited to Contribute," Says Hussey
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Michael Hussey stated, "I am incredibly excited to be involved in a more formal and significant capacity with the Australian team in the coming years. This team has achieved a lot recently, and I hope to contribute to the players and the coaching group through an exciting and challenging period ahead."
Head coach Andrew McDonald warmly welcomed Hussey's appointment, saying, "Mike has been a highly respected member of our coaching staff. His experience as a player and coach across different formats, leagues, and countries will be invaluable to the team. His personal qualities and mentorship skills will also greatly benefit the team."
Focus on 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cups
According to Ben Oliver, Cricket Australia's Head of National Teams, Hussey's primary focus will be on T20 format preparations. With a packed Test cricket schedule for Australia in the next 12 months, Hussey will collaborate closely with team management, coaches, and selectors to devise comprehensive T20 strategies. During the upcoming T20 series against England, head coach Andrew McDonald will be rested, with assistant coach Andre Borovec taking the reins. Hussey will work alongside Borovec, particularly with Australia's emerging talent in this series.
Oliver emphasized that even when not actively with the squad, Hussey will remain integral to the planning and preparation for the 2028 T20 tournaments. Australia is keenly focused on delivering strong performances at the Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup, and Hussey's expertise is seen as vital to achieving these ambitions.
