Promoted to the national T20I side hardly a year after winning the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, Shamim Hossain had a rough start, but eventually made his third coming in the Bangladesh team count as a T20 slog-overs specialist.
After his uncle discovered his natural big-hitting talent at an early age, Shamim was admitted to a local cricket academy before moving to BKSP, the country's main sports institute, in 2015. He climbed the usual age-group ranks before making it to the U-19 World Cup in 2020. Although he scored only 20 runs in the tournament, he picked up five wickets with his offspin, including 2 for 31 in the semi-final against New Zealand, and made an impact as a fielder.
He did well for Bangladesh A against Ireland A in March 2021 and was handed a T20I debut four months later. He started okay, but after a string of single-digit scores, including at the 2021 T20 World Cup, he was dropped. When he returned two years later, he scored his first international half-century, in a T20I against Ireland, and went on to make his ODI debut.
But it was only towards the end of 2024 that he got a decent run in the T20I side, this time round offering enough with the ball as well.
