A left-arm bowler with good pace and swing, Jason Behrendorff came to prominence for Australia in limited-overs cricket as a new-ball specialist. Born in Sydney and raised in Canberra, he made his career with Western Australia, debuting in the Shield in 2011-12 and breaking through two seasons on, when he finished second to Steve O'Keefe on the wicket charts with 40 at 22.70. That earned him a call-up to the Australia A squad for their four-day matches against South Africa in the 2014 winter.
He followed up with another superb season in 2014-15, helping WA win a domestic one-day title. He was named the Australian domestic cricketer of the year in January 2015. Injuries plagued him in 2016-17 but he took 14 for 89 in a Shield match against Victoria. That was more or less it for him in first-class cricket because ongoing back issues forced him to focus on limited-overs cricket.
In the BBL, Behrendorff was an important cog in the success of the formidable Perth Scorchers side, winning multiple titles, taking 16 or more wickets five seasons running from the 2020-21 tournament, and becoming one of the top all-time wicket-takers in the league.
He made his T20 international debut in India in October 2017 and took an impressive 4 for 21 in his second game, removing India's top four of Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey. He made his ODI debut in January 2019 and removed Dhawan again in his first over. Behrendorff was used judiciously in a specialist new-ball role on the ODI tours of India and the UAE, leading to his selection in the 2019 World Cup squad, where he turned in a decisive 5 for 44 in the game against England and finished with nine wickets in his five matches. However, he next played an ODI only three years later, and it turned out to be his last.
Behrendorff made it back to the T20I side late in 2023, the year he also had his most successful IPL (14 wickets for third-placed Mumbai Indians), and was voted Australia's T20I Player of the year for 2024.
